You will need a National Provider Identifier (NPI).
An NPI (National Provider Identifier) is a 10-digit identification number issued by NPPES, which gives unique identifiers to healthcare providers across the country. There are two types of NPIs - Type 1 (individuals) and Type 2 (group/organization). All doulas whether operating individually or as part of a group practice need a Type 1 NPI to be reimbursed by Maryland Medicaid. If you are a part of a group practice, you’ll also need your organization’s Type 2 NPI, and they have to enroll in ePREP (Medicaid portal) first as a New Group.
Go to the National Plan & Provider Enumeration System (NPPES) website and either login to your existing account or create a new account. If you can't remember your NPI, you can search the NPPES registry. Make sure you use the doula taxonomy code in the NPI system: 374J00000X
Check out the how-to guide to getting an NPI. You can also get help directly from NPPES by calling the NPI enumerator at 1-800-465-3203.
